noisy shifter

I am working on a 1961 Corvette with a 4 speed. The shifter is correct and has the pullup handles on the side for reverse engagement. This all works but the pullup shaft rattles on the main shifter shaft when driving. Anyone have any ideas how to quiet that down? Thanks

Sometimes the rattle is caused by a vibration. Sources of vibration can be a bad universal joint, tire out of balance, something out of balance in the transmission, etc.

Ted the Rev.lock out has a spring that also breaks internally. And will rattle. This happened on my 63.

There was a great article 1959-63 FOUR-SPEED SHIFTER RATTLE in the Driveline Vol-15 Issue-2 FALL 1988. I used the directions in this article to rebuild my shifter. I used pieces of plastic milk cartons as shims between the moving parts to tighten up the shifter from years of wear and also as sound dampers to stop the rattles.

Not to difficult once you have the shifter out of the car, and it worked wonders to quiet it down.
