    temp sending units....

    Mornin' fellow social distancers!
    Do any of you remember the volume/number of the RESTORER in which an article described the testing of water temp sending units? if so can you refresh my memory? Thanks and remember......6' separation! Bill

      Hi Bill!

      I think Jim Lockwood may have been the author.

      Cheers,

        Hey Bill, hope all is well in NM and everyone is playing it safe...here's what I can come up with by searching the Restorer CD

        Previous Restorer stories cited are: Temperature Sending Units, by Mike Hunt, Vol. 4 #4, Spring 1978;
        Engine Overheating Problems, by Dwight Farmer, Vol. 16 #2, Fall 1989;
        Engine Temperature Gauge Calibration, by Bill Halbert, Vol. 16 #4, Spring 1990;
        More Overheating - Another Angle, by David W. Mendocha, Vol. 16 #4, Spring 1990.

        Let me know if you need a copy of the articles...I can pull them from the cd and email them

            Not me, Joe, but I have spent a lot of time and effort developing a solution to the inaccuracy problems which are common to aftermarket senders.

                Hi Jim,

                Thanks for setting the record straight! Did you write a chapter newsletter article or maybe two, and that’s what I’m thinking of?

                  Joe,

                  I wrote a two part article for our northern CA chapter newsletter and perhaps you remember that?

                  Part 1 describes my experiments to understand why using an aftermarket sender often results in an inaccurate gauge. My conclusion was that aftermarket senders generate their own heat which skews the temperature they report to the gauge.

                  Part 2 describes how I decided to solve the problem for my car. I electrically separated the gauge from the sender and designed circuitry which stops the self-heating of the sender while driving the gauge to an accurate indication of engine temperature.

                  If this is not what you remember, and you'd like copies of my articles, I'll be happy to email them. PM me with your address.

                  Jim

                    Bill,
                    In cleaning out my garage today, I found a 12 year old CF article titled "Temp Sending Unit and Gauge"dealing with both units and incorrect readings. The author details temperature sending unit resistance at different temperatures. If you want a scanned copy of this, email me offline at grumpa72@gmail.com
