1971 lower Control arm shaft finish

    Hello,
My lower A-arm shaft bars appear to have been painted (black)and are believed original. The judging manual p250 indicates they should be natural.
can someone confirm the manual is correct?
    thank you

It very well could be painted black with the control arms, but we would expect the washers and bolts at both end to be black also. Painted as a complete assembly.

The 6th Edition, Page 224, says "typically unpainted". But we have seen them painted, occasionally one side painted and the other side not.

Typically lower shafts, bushings, and washers are natural while the uppers are usually black. I say usually because I have seen a couple of cars that are to be Bowtie/Survivors with one of the upper shafts painted black and the other natural. Like GB said if the shafts are black, then the rest of the assembly is also black. If it is natural, then the assembly is normally natural.

If Bubba has been there doing the usual rattle can restoration, you will have to look carefully to see if it was originally painted or not.
If Bubba's rattle can has avoided your car, and the retainers plus bolts are black, then you're OK.
