I installed my driven gear and sleeve on a spare tail shaft housing, and attached the Paragon speedo cable. I could rotate the driven gear freely. I cable was just not long enough to engage the gear. Mystery solved. Thanks Don.

Joe——Another question, my parts book is pretty vague about whether my drive gear is 3708144 or 3708145 (L-71 with 3.70 rear). I think it is probably the small gear 3708145. Will the 21 tooth red driven gear 3987921 work with the 3708145? Will the green 22 tooth 3860345 for 3.70 rears work with both driven gears?

When you say "including the nuts" do you mean with the nuts pulled forward as far as they will go (i.e. seated on the flare of the end fitting)? The standard method for measuring speedometer cable assembly lengths is to measure the casing from end-to-end exclusive of the nuts.

Assuming your transmission and rear end are original to the car, then the installed speedometer DRIVE gear should be the GM #3708145. That gear is compatible with the green 3860345 DRIVEN gear. However, it is NOT compatible with the 21 tooth GM #3987921. There is no DRIVEN gear of less than 22 tooth count that is compatible with the 3860345 DRIVE gear.

I measured it stretched out end to end including the nuts. I did know there was a standard method.

Gary ——- Asuming that you were replacing a cable on a car that was all together, were you able to do that with the steering column and gauge cluster in place?

I had reproduction speedometer cable trouble on my 66 and 69, Until on this forum they told me about https://deluxespeedometer.com/, (made in America) ordered 1 for my 66, fast delivery, new cable works as it should, I then ordered for my 69, I was so happy the speedometer was finally working smooth

Thanks Gary, that is encouraging. I have a tele column also but no A/C in the way. I will certainly take the seat out though.

                  Pat,
I removed the steering wheel, edged the cluster out as far as possible on 6" long 1/4-20 bolts for support. I also remove the drivers seat, and opened the convertible deck lid so I could lay on my back with my head and arms under the dash. The really hard part was getting the rubber grommet back in for the speedo and tach cables. I had also removed the passenger front pipe with its heat shield to get to the transmission end of the cable.

It was a a "fun filled" three quarter day project

                    Pat,
I have an extra cable that I took out of my car. You're welcome to it if would be helpful.

                        Patrick,

As long as the cables are just finger tight on the speedometer you should be able to reach up and remove it from the speedometer. I've done both cables on my 63 and there is less room up there on that year as I recall. I also have a few years on you.
