65 muncie with locator gauge for linkage installed

Does anyone have a picture of a Muncie on the bench, with shifter linkage attached, and locator gauge inserted?

Shifter is in neutral for 1-2 as far as I can tell by feel. Can anyone cipher from my pictures how I get these to line up? I don't see a slot for a gauge at all. I see kind of a half moon on the back part of the shifter in the photo. A Hurst shifter and a 1/4" drill bit looks better and better all the time. I would sure like to keep the Muncie shifter though. Hard to get better pictures with a car on jack stands. Any thoughts?

          John,
I'd start by disconnecting the shift rods from the transmission and let them hang from the shifter.. (Do NOT make any adjustments to the length of the rods at this time)
Now, align all the shifter "gates" to neutral. Slide the locator into the slot. You may need to bend the locator to get it into the slot depending on length.....
With the locator in the slot, reattach the shift rods to the transmission, adjusting the length of the rods appropriately. Make sure the transmission arms are ALL in the neutral position. Adjustment will probably be minimal on each rod.
Once you feel the adjustment is correct, remove the locator and test the linkage for proper shifting.
The width of the locator is the important dimension, not the thickness of the metal.

An old beer can opener works pretty good for a locator..... of course you need to be old enough to know what I'm referencing, as new beer cans use the flip tabs. LOL.
Note: This photo is a 67 shifter mount.
          Good luck

I must be going blind. I do not see a slot whatsoever on the drivers side of the shifter plate as in your photo. Is my shifter a 65? It is what came with it on my recent purchase. Really hard to get a photo. But I do not see a slot as it is now. The slot should be there no matter what gear you are in, right?

John, The photo is of a 67 shifter. I'm under the impression that a 65 is similiar... except that on 67, the shifter is mounted to the frame, not the trans itself. Other than that I thought they were similiar/same. Do you have a service manual for 65? Does is show or discuss the slot and locator? Sorry if I led you on the wrong path...... The data from WILCOX mentioned earlier, indicates these are very similiar. Can you "feel" a slot in that location but not see it.... possibly a small mirror might help. I recall checking mine installed in the car and it was a real bitch; out in the open no problem.

Here is a 68 I have on the bench for a tech school. I cant get my 65 on the lift right now, but I question that plate that is bolted to your transmission as being Hurst.

Here is the gauge. It's a flat piece of steel. The AIM shows the same tool.

I'll unbolt and drop the arms tomorrow. Maybe it will appear then.

Okay. Just dropped the rods, and there is NO slot as indicated above. The rearward side of the shifter arms does halve the half-moon as shown in my picture #2 above. Is this 65 linkage or something else? Where do I go from here?

Do you have a Service Manual for your 65? Does it show the locator tool? I don't know if your shifter is "correct" .......

Can you use the "half moon" notch for alignment? This may take 2 people to keep the shift lever steady....

                      Procedure:
1 disconnect the shift rods from the trans
2 insure all gears are in neutral on trans
3 align the shifter arms on the shift mechanism using a dowel in the "half moon" notch.
4 While holding dowel alignment have someone check shifter inside car by swinging shifter side to side. This will tell you all the "gates" are aligned.
5 Now, while holding dowel in position, adjust/attach a shift rod to trans. (adjust length as required). Repeat step 4 to insure gates are still aligned.
6 Install second shift rod as in step 5.....Repeat step 4....
7 Install last shift rod as in step 5.... repeat step 4.....

You may need to perform this a couple of times.
