On my 59 283 fuel pump it seems that the bottom is always wet with gas not leaking just wet on the bottom gasket is this normal

No. Make sure the fuel lines are tight, then go around the bottom of the pump and carefully tighten the diaphragm perimeter screws, they are often loose...the same with the two bottom cover screws (but don't crazy with them). Beyond that you may well have a leak at the mounting gasket, or, the gasket behind the block plate that holds the push rod up...- Top

I agree with Frank. I use AV gas and noticed blue residue around the base of the fuel pump a week or so ago. I found that the diaphram screws around the perimeter were rather loose so I tightened them up, cleaned off the residue and haven't had a leak since.Keith MacRae
