    1960 T-10 Countergear needle bearing

confused by the order of assembly of the needle bearings. i have come across two different methods.

    1. The passenger shop manual supplement - four speed transmission order is as follow:

Load the countergear with the spacer tube, needle row, 2 spacer ring, needle row then spacer ring. Once this has been completed flip the gear around, needle row, 2 spacer rings, needle row and sixth spacer ring.

    2. Load the countergear with the spacer tube, spacer ring, needle row, spacer ring, needle row, and then spacer ring. Once this has been completed, flip the gear around and add a spacer ring, needle row, spacer ring, needle row, and sixth spacer ring. The outside rings should be recessed slightly in the gear.

also found conflicting order of assembly online.

I have assembled according to the manual and curious if one way is better ..

As long as you get them installed as shown in the diagrams and photos, it does not matter how you do it. By the way, tool J-5589 may be helpful but is not necessary. I fabricated one of these once-upon-a-time and never ended up using it.

      Joe,
You probably did good. When I did the 4 speeds I used a counter shaft that was shortened and loaded the rollers on to the shaft, then lowered the cluster and shaft into place and when I inserted the cluster shaft it pushed the shortened shaft out and I was sure that no roller fell out of place.

I actually used twice the rollers on the shaft by cutting down the spacer tube and adding rollers. We did that to eliminate any cluster shaft flexing when power shifting 2nd and 3rd gear.

I have done it both ways . But I like the meathead that does not have 2 spacer rings together. The spacer rings are actually a thrust washer . I think it would be better to have the thrust washer against the tube . I do not think the tube is hardened like the thrust washer.
