sealer for C1 gas tank cover

After you replace a gas tank sending unit on a '62, what kind of sealer do you use when replacing the cover that you screw back?
    Thanks down

William I always used 3M Strip Caulk, applied to the cover. You could also use that self-stick narrow gray foam, like for house windows, etc.

You want the "closed cell" foam insulation..

        Frank,
You mean if I use the house window foam use closed cell foa But the caulk strips would be first choice, wouldn't they?
        Thanks

Exactly - I used this stuff:

          https://www.amazon.com/Density-Adhes...4982818&sr=8-8

Available in various thicknesses and lengths....and its neoprene and impervious to fuel fumes..

I used windshield adhesive BUT I recommend you do not use it. I tried to pull up the cover and it is a real mess.

Can I change just the float of the fuel tank sensor rather than the complete setup?

Yes. The float just snaps into the sender arm.

As far as re-sealing the lid goes, if you don't have access to GM strip caulk, go to your local hardware store and get some "plumbers putty". It's the same thing but you'll have to make your own strips. Kind of like "Roll Your Own".

3M 08578 strip caulk. And you will get a total of 60' of it.

                      Agree - good stuff

Use it on my C1's for many things. Including putting on the tip of a long screwdriver to retrieve dropped nuts / bolts in hard to reach locations.
