    70-72 Removable T-Top Storage Bags

The 5th Edition 70-72 TIMJG states "all OEM bags had a manufacturing date code". The 6th Edition 70-72 TIMJG states "The bags have a manufacturer's name or logo and date printed in the lining." Then in the The 6th Edition, several lines down, it states "Some are also plain cotton with no logo or date printed in the lining." Both editions state that some of the date stamps were water soluble and may have been dissolved from water leakage and therefore not to deduct unless a stamped date is later than the car.

My question is do we now believe that not all OEM bags had stamped dates in the lining and therefore the date should not be used as a judging criteria except as a deduct for a stamped date that is later than the car?

I believe that all had the red date stamp, but not all ended up with the manufacturer's logo.

It does not take much to have the date stamp disappear. Because of this the date and the logo are not judged unless there is a date and it is after the car's build date.

Hmmm.... So, how would you "put it in print" so it's easier to understand, or make it clearer.

My experience on these bags is they have a manufacturers logo with a date ( M/YR ) that was inked on the back of the fabric when the fabric rolls (bolts) were made. As I recall there were two manufacturers. That printing will fade but in most cases survived the test of time and was generally black in color. Those rolls were then used by the stitcher to create the actual bags and install the snaps. At that time a library stamp was used by the stitcher to indicate the date they were made. That is the stamp that is water solubile and often faded or disappeared. It was generally red in color when stamped.

I have seen enough without manufacturer's logos to suspect that not all ended up with the logo printed on the inside. It likely depended on where in the roll of material the bag was cut.

Either that or a lot of people took bleach to the inside of their bags to clean them over the years.

I'm not with you on that. The large majority of the original bags I've seen do have the manufacturers logo. Maybe some were reproduced and if so the manufacturers logo would not exist.

I didn’t specify majority/minority. I said that I’d seen enough without logos to think that not all of them had them.

All I can say is if the bags lack the manufacturers logo one should scrutinize the details of the bag itself.

Many that I have judged were as Patrick describes--plain fabric. Photos on p. 55 of the latest JG show very faded logos and I suppose they could have been completely obliterated with time.

The first paragraph on p. 56 states there is to be no deduction if the assembly date is missing, only if the date is later than the car.

For what it's worth, attached are photos of the red manufacturer's logo and date stamp on my bags. I never had any water soluble black assembly date stamp on my bags. The red stamp appears to be resistant to fading or wash off. In any case, based on this discussion, I will not judge the date stamp or logo stamp unless the date appears and is later than the car.

                      Erich,
The stitching (assembly) dates were never black from my experience. That library stamp date was always red. Did you look inside carefully to see if more of the fabric identification/date was in there.??? I have a Feb 1972 pair of bags here if anyone would like to see the ID markings.

                        Dave,

I just looked inside both bags- no additional markings. The red stamp in the picture is "NOV 22 1971". Build date on my car is Nov 30, 1971.

So your bags were stitched on Nov 22, 1971 and got to St. Louis right after. Very quick. The other red marking in your photo below the date is the manufacturers mark. Often that mark repeates itself and has a date with it.
