1964 FI HP Pump Drive Assembly

    Hi,
I was able to purchase a NOS Fuel Injection Pump Drive Assembly still in the box. The grease inside the mechanism was well beyond its "Use by" date, so it has been thoroughly degreased and cleaned internally, as well as the flexible shaft. Does anyone have a recommendation on the type of grease I should use in it, now that it has been cleaned? Can I use a general purpose grease, or should I be considering something more specialized? This is for a 1964 FI L84.

    I appreciate any recommendations.

    Thank you.

John, are you referring to the high pressure gear pump in the bottom of the fuel meter? If so, any lubrication you use will be washed away by the flow of fuel. That said, and assuming you are referring to the gear pump, to establish proper running clearances between the gear teeth and the cavity in which they spin, assemble pump with the gears coated in oil.

I should have been more specific. My bad. I am referring to the distributor to HP fuel pump drive mechanism and internal shaft.

      Thanks.

Ah, I misunderstood. You want to know what kind of lubrication to use on the flexible drive cable, yes?

I use wheel bearing grease and lots of it.

How much is "lots"? Well, let's put it this way: Too much is not enough. Is that clear?

Got it! No such thing as too much! (In this regard.)
Thank you for your help Jim.

There was a spare drive cable in the glove box when I bought the car a few years ago. I always figured it must be a weak link. It's still in there. I doubt they have them at the local NAPA.

              Thanks!

John, Just saw your post. I have told 1000's to just use Disc Brake Wheel Bearing grease. Any brand will do.
At my shop I have a tube of it for a grease gun. I dip the cable in it three times.
If I use a can of it. I put the grease like tooth paste. About three times. More is better than less.

Thanks John, I appreciate your response and recommendation! That "more is better" seems to be a common theme.
