63 Fuel injection tune up specs.

just started newly rebuilt engine and fuel unit. and want to fine tune everything, whats the base timing set at, dwell 28-32 ? valve lash , i am going to do it with the covers off running.( easier for me). I realize the everyone has the own spec.s for gasoline today is not what is was. i will be trying 100LL first.your input please.

All the OE tune-up recommendations you need are found in the owner's manual, shop manual, and AMA specs that you can download from the GM Heritage Web site.

However the OE specs are not optimum. The fuel octane requirement for your engine is a function of compression ratio, camshaft, and worse case ambient temperature and pressure conditions, but you have not provided requisite information. Chances are your engine doesn't need 100LL avgas, but it will mitigate percolation, which can be issues with typical E10.

I just can't understand why you would want to do the valve lash "hot and running" as it is so much easier to do is cold and not running using the Hinckley-Williams cold, not running method... no oil flying all over the place and burned fingers! Do a web search for the paper and make sure you get the Sept/08 revision. Recommended lash is specified for all OE SB mechanical lifter cams. You should also look at my 2012 San Diego national convention tuning seminar... again, easy web search.

I highly recommend Duke/Johns method of cold non running valve setting. I did it on my LT-1 engine and it started well and sounded like a finely tuned sewing machine. After over 8k miles it still has very little escalated noise and starts and runs rather well. I would never go back to the old way. I have a set of John Bandimere Sr. patented oil hole clips that I will put in the old tool museum. Give it a try. Set them up slow and easy the first couple of times. Paul
