    Semi Flat Vs Semi Gloss

Hoping someone can clarify if Semi flat and Semi Gloss are considered the same. I have the current Judging manual for 56/57 and looked up the fan pulley and fan blade and it says to paint semi gloss black. Went ahead and painted today and then was going through back of manual looking for another finish for something else and found there where nit says to paint the pulley and the blade semi flat? Are they the same, if not which is correct?

    Thanks

IMO - not the same, particularly if you consider Krylon 1613 Sem-Flat "5 ball" Industrial compared to a semi-gloss.
The Krylon has an "eggshell" sheen which doesn't resemble semi-gloss at all to my old eyes...

Re: Semi Flat Vs Semi Gloss

After 30 + years in the paint pigment and raw material business, I can say that semi-gloss and semi-flat can be the same paint. Just depends on marketing people in each company. Theoretically semi flat should be lower gloss where semi gloss should be higher gloss, or so one would think. It is all a name game between manufacturers. Also, as anyone in the paint business will tell you the application techniques have a whole lot to do with gloss / sheen. For NCRS stuff Krylon 1613 seems to be very accepted. Unfortunately, 1613-5 is an enamel paint versus lacquer (thanks to environmentalists) 1613 can still be found but is a lot harder to find than it was. Personally, I like the enamel gloss 1613-5 as with age it dulls to a very nice level. Unfortunately, the old lacquer material dried very quickly, 1613-5 does not. More patience is needed. There are a lot of acceptable products. I like Rustoleum but it is VERY slow drying, but has a tough finish when cured. Experiment and find what you like and use it. As long as it is not glossy or dull, it probably will be close

The 1613 acrylic lacquer is not hard to find:

The Krylon 1613 is a high-quality spray paint that is perfect for both indoor and outdoor use. With a tough finish and uniform coverage, this paint is a great option for anyone looking for a durable, long-lasting product.

        Another advantage is easy touch-up...

If my memory is correct semi-gloss is 70% gloss, semi-flat is 50% gloss. My useless nugget of the day

I guess the big question is what is correct for the fan and the pulley on a 1956 early set number car. semi-gloss or semi flat. under the descriptions in the manual it says semi gloss but in back of manual it says semi flat??
