Correct plating finish for vacuum can. 71 Lt-1 distributor

    Correct plating finish for vacuum can. 71 Lt-1 distributor

    What is the correct plating finish for a 71 Lt-1 distributor vacuum?
    examples in photos are not necessarily correct or 71

    I see nobody has answered so.....

    I think they were zinc-plated. When I restore them, I have them zinc plated and have not been deducted for it. It is not addressed in 70-72 TIM&JG. I'll see if we can fix that sometime.

    If you just plug the nipple, they can be plated. Platers don't like to do them, because they they don't sink and require more work. Just make sure you clean the inside well when they come back from plating, I blow the dry with compressed air from the backside.

          They were definitely zinc plated. The original plating was a bit less shiny than today's even allowing for the fact that NOS examples may have slightly oxidized.

            A while ago I brought my original to my local plater who I have been using for almost 40 years and his opinion was that they were clear zinc plated.

              Robert,

              Hope the attached photo helps. This is the original vacuum canister: never was restored. I put a light cote of Vaseline on it to slow down corrosion.
