    Distributor cap questions?

I will shortly be bringing my 1972 LT-1 out of hibernation and I plan on replacing some components, one of which is a no-name distributor cap. The various catalogs sell Delco reproductions, no-name black caps, and Dr. Rebuild says he has one with "Patent Pending R". Does anyone have experience with either Dr. Rebuild's as far as functionality and appearance for judging. At this point I am not chasing points, I just want to continue to drive my car. Oth, if his cap judges well and performs well, then I might do it. And finally, are there any functionality issues with a no-name distributor cap versus one that has some of the judging attributes? My no-name has been on the car since I bought it so its age is unknown but at least 18 years old with about 10000 miles on it.

    Thank you in advance.

I cannot comment on the reproductions since I have no experience with them. However, your "no name" cap could very well be a Delco cap. MANY years ago the Delco SERVICE caps lost their external embossments. For a long period of time thereafter they did have a Delco embossment inside the cap on the top surface. Later yet, when Delco got out of the distributor cap manufacturing business, the caps were "outsourced" and lost all embossments.

Bill Clupper either posted here or wrote an article for The Restorer Magazine several years back. I cannot remember the particulars but the Patent Pending R continued many years after the patent was issued.

          Gary,
I use this cap from K&B and it functions and judges very well. This is a link to LIC but you can buy it directly from K&B, as well.

Thank you Leif. In reviewing the site and your car, this cap does not contain the "R" which I read is correct up through 68.

So, no one has the Doc Rebuild? Even though he says to not buy this if you are chasing point?

say a prayer for bill clipper, a past present of NCRS in the mid to late 80's. He's in an extended care facility with Alzheimers. mike

Bill's story was in The Restorer, and was about the length of the rotor contact.
