Correct Starter 396 Starter Wiring Routing

So I am trying to determine the correct starter wiring routing as it drops from the top of the firewall down to the starter. The AIM shows it routed to the outside of the heater hoses. I have pictures of three different originlal Duntov and or Survivor '65 396 Corvettes that I used as restoration reference. Two show the wiring on the inside of the heater hoses and one shows it on the outside. Per the AIM it appears they should be on the outside.

    Thanks,

    James West

Mine was originally on the inside so when I restored the car, that's how I ran it. The first pic. is of mine. The second pic. is of a 15K original mile, multiple Top Flight, Duntov Mark of Excellence car that shows it on the inside as well. These two were only 10 cars apart on the assembly line. It's certainly not the first time the A.I.M. wasn't followed.

I vote AIM UPC 12, Sheet A9. Here's a pic off L78 VIN 23564 (never restored ). The starter solenoid wires harness drop vertically to catch the clip on the bottom edge of the heater box cover. I'm in no way saying this is NCRS correct.

i agree with wayne and jim. routed inside heater hoses, down to j-clip on lower/inner heater box cover speed nut/stud, then down to solenoid. At least our 2 396's ran this way. mike

Wayne, The clip on the heater was used on small block cars. Neither of the two L78 cars I posted above had one. The clip on those cars was a few inches inboard of the heater cover.
P.S. - the never restored car in your pic. has 1967 style spark plug wires.

              James,

My one owner '65 396 has the wiring harness on the inside of the heater hoses.

Inside the hoses - just my 2 cents worth
