Taping Off 1970 Front Grilles For Painting

I am taping off my front grilles to paint the dark gray areas. I have a couple of areas I am not sure about.

Is the area to the outside of the turn signal lenses that narrows down to a point at the top painted clear to the point? Or is it squared off somewhere below the point?

Is the area inside the egg crate that has the bolt hole in it painted? I was thinking the mask would have this egg crate square pretty well closed off to where it would get little if any paint in it.

    Thanks,
    Allen

Hi Allen. I hope you're doing well.

Regarding your first question, the latest JG only discusses how the lower/inner end of the black paint ends: "The outer edge of the parking light is painted black and blends into the dark gray textured paint finish just above the lower grill bar." But it doesn't say where/how the black paint ends at the upper/outer corner.

I also found this thread: https://www.forums.ncrs.org/showthre...es-Refinishing
It confirms what the JG says, but nothing about the transition of black at the upper corner.

Regarding your second question: Page 73 of the JG, photo E 6.4 shows the screws holding the grilles to the inner brackets. The flat area around them appears to be unpainted.

When I have access to my '70, I'll take a look. But it has service replacement grilles (3 screw style).

Hi Mark. I am doing well, and I hope you are as well.

Thank you for the response. I had seen the pictures you referenced above and that was part of my reasoning that the squares with screw holes should not be painted.

Still not sure about the dark grey to the outside of the turn signal lenses.

      Thanks again,
      Allen
