Getting 14.9 - 15 volts at battery, too high?

Can 14.9 to 15 volts measured at the battery with car idling cause damage. I had the alternator rebuilt and wondering if I should have the vendor go back in and get the voltage down to what I believe would be more in spec.

    Thanks,

    Jack

Hmmmm.... I always say that between 13.8 and 14.2 is optimal. I think you are a bit high and it may be the voltage regulator vs the alternator...

Here is my original 63 alternator at a brisk idle:

Thanks for the response Frank. I should have indicted it's a '69 with an internal regulator hence my focus on the just rebuilt alternator.

Yes Jack, it is too high. 14.4 max, better if it is a little lower than that. 14.9 - 15 will cook the battery and stress all the light bulbs, especially any Halogen, if you have any.

The internal regular is a thick film hybrid module, and is obviously no good. They cannot be adjusted - it is toast. Good that you found it before you damaged anything.

Thanks Dan. I thought so as well but was just a bit surprised that the vendor was not more adamant that I send it back so it can be corrected. He did not immediately say "no, that's no good send it back" but more like "yeah, they're high sometimes but send it back and I can change it so it's lower if you prefer" as if it's not a big deal.

Your batter will not last as long as it should, as it is overcharging.
            Yes, get it within specifications.
