I got a flat the other night on my 2019 Silverado i changed out on a side road. on Saturday i plugged the tire and changed it out. I was shocked to read on the side of my full size spare " limited use only". I am glad i was not towing a trailer or had a heavy load at time of flat. Can't believe that chevy has stooped this low to save a few bucks. I at least wish the dealer had told me especially when i ordered the trailer package.

If equipped with a temporary usefull-size spare tire, it is indicated onthe tire sidewall. See Tire SidewallLabeling 0 362. This spare tire should not be driven on over112 km/h (70 mph), or 88 km/h(55 mph) when pulling a trailer, atthe proper inflation pressure. Repairand replace the road tire as soon asit is convenient, and stow the sparetire for future use.

Re: Chevy Silverado info
To clarify, the new Silverado spare is not a compact size...it's full size but just a crappy, cheaper limited use tire. Sad.
At least the Silverado has a spare. My 2017 Malibu Premier just has a can of fix-a-flat and a note that says "good luck"...and no, it does not have run-flats.

Re: Chevy Silverado info
I understand the frustration with being surprised. But needing a spare tire has become a rare occurrence in modern times. I can't remember the last time I used one.
The need for lugging an extra tire around has gone away like the desert water bag did when pressurized radiators arrived.

Re: Chevy Silverado info
I've owned 3 Silverado's now, and the quality IMO has steadily been going down hill in an effort to save a few pennies on parts. On my latest, I had to replace all the brake lines when I got it (3 years old), then cab mounts, and a host of brake problems with the rear calipers and e-brake. The clutch pedal is made of plastic (and they sell a lot of them). Does not surprise me they found more corners to cut.
If you are going to carry a spare and have the room (which these trucks certainly do), I would want a regular standard tire.- Top

If you tried to purchase one of these "limited use" tires, I think you would find that it costs as much or more than a standard tire.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

I doubt the dealer even knew. My car buying experiences the last few years have shown that the dealers are really good about telling you about the flashy stuff and can tell you all about how to setup Apple CarPlay, but know very little about "trivial details" that are important to real car guys. It's even getting harder to find real Specs on new vehicles anymore.
And Joe, I looked into the temp tire thing vs real tire on TireRack's website a while back for my son's Hyundai. He'd had a tire blowout and his spare was also toast, so he needed both. A temp tire was much cheaper in that application, but granted it was a compact size context too, so you could still be right for fullsize context.- Top

Since I've already been complaining and am in a mood about it...

Joe
well aware of that i bought my first new K5 blazer in 84 . Bought a 2015 vette in 15 i always thought that the vet did away with the spare tire because of space. Pissed when i bought a Cruze and found a patch kit and a pump in the tire well. I bought a wheel and tire to keep in the trunk. Before any one says what a waste of energy and money dragging a spare around let it be known that i drive 130 miles a day back and forth to Manhattan never needed it but you never know!!- Top

Re: Chevy Silverado info
I have to say that it would take a lot for me to change a tire alongside a busy road nowadays. Seems like some poor soul gets wiped out here in central Florida about once a week working in and around a disabled car. Just last night some jerk ran off the Florida turnpike roadway a 1/2 mile from my house and hit a disabled car on the shoulder resulting in 1 death and 4 carried to the hospital in Winter Garden. I had passed that spot not 15 minutes earlier...
AAA and a cell phone are critical when driving anymore.
Having said that, its still a comfort to know, when possible, you can swap a REAL tire onto the car and continue an extended journey safely.- Top
