I was told a company called SMS or something like that has ORIGINAL vinyl that Knoch will use to make proper
seat covers I just need one seat panel vinyl black Has anybody heard of them or if this is true ?
Cost I hear was expensive Need used seat panel, drivers door panel and drivers carpet ORIGINAL PW standard

Bob,

If you only need one, and in black, find an original. It’s the most common color and not difficult to obtain one in good condition. Don’t waste your time with anything else.

SMS Auto Fabrics is located in Oregon. Several years ago the sent me a sample of original GM Comfort Weave for my '69. They said it was real factory vinyl, not reproduction. They may have original for your '70. Expensive but if you want the real thing... I recently purchased some material for my '51 Chevrolet which is reproduction but almost an exact match to the original. Very nice people to work with.

Patrick, interesting I got a hit from "corvette parts man" on ebay and he says he has seat covers, door panel and carpet factory origingal he will take out of a car for $1,000. I asked for photos and reassurance they are FACTORY ORIGINAL ST LOUIS FACTORY !!
What do you think of the price ? know the guy ?

Thanks, I will give them a try, I just need one seat panel the rest is very good drivers door panel I can probable get a good vinyl repair guy to fix original carpet, drivers side only is out there somewhere.

Am I missing something? A bowtie-type car is judged with the part, finish, etc. that it left the factory with, so if your intent is that, you need to leave those pieces alone. Condition is largely irrelevant in that type of judging. If it is, as you term it, a "survivor-type" car and you are just trying to make it look better in your eyes and in the eyes of others (not NCRS judges), then you are going about it in a proper manner.

If you do find originals and if they are in need of some minor repairs, there is a guy in CT that I could hook you up with. He incorporates the grain and sheen just like when they were new, but definitely take Patrick's advise and pursue the real thing because they are out there. - Ron

With regards to SMS: I recently had dealings with the company regarding all the vinyl for my 1964 Corvette. That being said, if ANYONE is considering SMS, I STRONGLY advise you to (1), get a CURRENT sample from them. And (2), have the vinyl ordered shipped to you for your inspection and approval and then YOU can proceed to ship the material to AL Knoch. In hindsight, my experience was disappointing, frustrating and costly. Jack J.

Sorry you had a bad experience with them. This morning a fellow member and I reinstalled the front seat on my 51 Chevrolet with new seat covers using material from SMS. I had them sewn up at a local shop. My experience was the exact opposite. I know, this was a fabric not vinyl but the service, communication, and color match to the original 70 year old fabric (areas hidden from the sun) was just about perfect. I guess every transaction is different.

Jeff, my mistake was NOT having the vinyl shipped to me FIRST and then I ship the vinyl to Al Knoch. I foolishly assumed that the 5 1/2 yards I ordered from a sample would be the same as the sample. I chose to have SMS ship directly to Al Knoch. When my entire completed interior (less visors) arrived FROM Al Knoch, it was NOT what I expected. SMS began to point fingers at me as well as Al Knoch for the mistake. 1964 Metallic Silver is unique and only to 1964 with regards to mid-years. Jack J.

Guys, THANK YOU for the input. The plan was to do the car as a survivor. This car has a lot going for it, very original complete engine, chassis and, interior, BUT the paint is the problem. At first I thought it was just normal checking with a few spots painted enough to go survivor.
The more I remove emblems etc and take a hard look it appears over 70% of the car has been painted so I think that is end of survivor judging.
SO, the Top Flight journey is on, I am actively working to find 1 original seat and drivers carpet. A good vinyl repair guy should be able to repair the small area of the drivers door panel that is cracked. It will receive a proper paint job with jams left original. The hardtop has been in storage evidently because the paint is 100% original and I had a professional polisher buff it and it looks outstanding, perfect for color match too. I have done a lot of learning on my blue 70, had to redo a LOT of stuff I did wrong but that's OK. This one I will make fewer mistakes,
and IF I can get Top Flight this one will be DRIVEN I am open to suggestions, I will push for answers and opinions that's how we learn. 70 2 top convertible air, auto, tilt, PW ,PB 300 yellow with black vinyl interior all original docs from original lady owner that bought it new including window sticker Thanks for your help Bob
