C1: What paint is being used today to restore the chassis to factory like appearance?

I'm about to enter the phase to paint the chassis of my '59. I recently obtained an old C1 doc from John Hinckley (co-authored with Dale Pearman) that explained the chassis assembly and painting process.
The document (from 2002) highly suggested PPG DP90 as it was durable and closely matched the factory color.

What's being used today to restore the c1 chassis to factory like appearance?

Assume I'm planning to have the car judged and be close to a daily driver.

I used Rustoleum satin door paint on my 65 396 chassis. Solvent based and looks about the right gloss versus original.

I have used PPG 9300 black Deltron with DX 685 added to achieve a 70% gloss. Very durable. Little expensive, but consider the labor to refinish it again.

I used PPG DP90. Worked well for me.

John I used DP 90 as a primer and the Deltron on top of it.

Do you know if these PPG products are still available?

Is the DP 90 you used one of the newer codes: DP90LF, DP90LV, DP90LV (NR)?

With Deltron 9300 black I'm assuming the new code is DBC9700 Basecoat Black?

Jacob, The DP90LF stands for the 'Lead Free' primer version.

9300 single stage with DX 685 added to flatten it. DP 90 has become DPLF

This is another topic that has been brought up on the DB several times in the past. Original type paint that was used from 1953 thru sometime in 1969 frame production at A.O. Smith was an asphalt base that was a semi-flat finish. A.O. Smith actually stopped buying this paint and switched over to Dupont 640 black primer that was an enamel type base and was a little glossier than the asphalt coating. Although it is my opinion that they did not start painting the frames with the latter type paint is that they needed to exhaust the asphalt that was still in their inventory. I have seen some early 1969 frames with the asphalt base and the Dupont 640 black primer used on later 69's and all 1970's thru 1975. Keep in mind that this was calendar year. If you google asphalt paint you may just find someone still producing it. I was fortunate enough to acquire some of the asphalt base paint many years ago and still have enough to do one more frame. However, this paint will not last and hold up to the elements if you are planned on driving your car. The members that have responded to this post made some very good suggestions that would work just fine.

Back in my working days black pipe used to show up with asphalt base paint. It is the least expensive (something better than nothing) paint that could possibly be manufactured. You could scratch it with a fingernail and it would begin to rust at that point. My guess is it is still available somewhere in an industrial setting. Dick's comment about refinishing it again, if you use asphalt base paint, is good advice.

That's the same stuff that I used except I bought the quart cans and sprayed it on. I liked the finish and the sheen seems just about right. I agree with Lynn that it is durable.
