knock off wheels

hey guys,
i just purchased a 65 with original knock of wheels. anything special i need to know about removing and reinstalling the wheels. Never have done this before.

I'd make sure they are installed on the correct side of the car. Mark them with a marker as to where they go after you are sure they are in the right spot.

If you don't have someone to step on the brake when you pull the front adapters you need and impact wrench.

After installation make a line from the cone to the spinner with a sharpie. Look at it after driving to see if the spinner moved. Great peace of mind. I use a 7 lb. lead hammer. I little never seize is a good idea. Over tighten them and you will regret it.

When the wheels are off, clean the splines of each very clean. I used a anti-size compound before re-install. If the splines are dirty, sand gets in the splines and once the wheels are installed, the sand breaks down and the wheels get loose. Knock offs where outlawed in 1966 because of this problem, so all 1967 knock offs became ''bolt ons'' with 5 lugs as steel wheels. The advice above by Dave is to check and re hammer after you have driven about a mile is the perfect way and you will not have any problems.

I gotta ask..... is that a dead blow hammer? Do you tighten spinners on k/o rims with a dead blow instead of a lead hammer? Can you get them tight enough with a dead blow?

It's what I've been using. no problems. It's a 4 lbs. Tighten, mark, drive, re-tighten if necessary. Oh, and use the safety pins.

Harry,

Did I see you use a 4lb dead hammer or a 7 lb? This is a one time use, so I'd rather go inexpensively as possible with the hammer. The 7 lb's are pretty pricey.

First, you'd better make DAMMED SURE they are KNOCKOFFs. Pry the caps off and look for inserts........
