Question on the Corvette knock-off wheels?

After watching the Mecum and Older Barret-Jackson Auctions I noticed that some of the Cobra
Knock-Off Spinners are "Safety Wired" to prevent them from getting loose. Question Can this be
done with the K-H Corvette Knock-Offs? Has anybody ever seen this done? Thanks in Advance-Larry

I'm sure it can be done but I can't think of a reason to do it.

Properly installed, KO spinners will not spontaneously loosen themselves any more than lug nuts, correctly installed, will spontaneously loosen or that properly torqued head bolts will work loose.

The Grand Sport track cars my bride and I drove have knock-off wheels. The spinners are not safety wired and we've never lost a wheel.

The secret is to install the wheels and spinners correctly, and not to worry about safety wire or even those ridiculous pins.

The Cobra wheels always look cool safety wired, I wire the Halibrand wheels I have. There is a small hole drilled in one of the spinners for the wire. I have never seen a Corvette knock-off wheel safety wired, I certainly would not drill a hole in the spinner on a Corvette wheel.

I would drill a very small hole in the spinner and an equally small hole in the lower fender and wire that spinner down!

l like this, Mike! For anyone who is so paranoid about spinners coming loose as to feel the need for safety wire, THIS is exactly what you should do!

Don't you mean a rib on the wheel?

Yep. The fender. Speaking only for myself, of course, it's what I would do. That's the highest and best use of safety wire with respect to KO spinners. Ya just don't need it.

" For anyone who is so paranoid about spinners coming loose " That includes me, so just mark with a grease pen the cone and spinner, if KO installed correctly these should never move and make you feel better.

There are so many very accurate versions of the KOs that have secure systems to keep them in place, I don't see why anyone would drive around on the original types anyway.

Be sure to drill the hole in the fender lip that way it won't be noticeable.

Thought gov didn't like them because of the spinners. They thought people would use them like Ben Hur's protagonist in the chariot race and chew up pedestrians or other cars, not because they may come loose and cause the wheel to fall off (although some have).

Yes, our government Nannies decided we couldn't have Knock off wheels in 1966, but for the safety of pedestrians.

Answer (1 of 12): To protect pedestrians, in 1967 the US government banned knockoff spinners which could be removed with a hammer. Removing a single large nut with a large socket would be fiddly with a hammer and paired with a long cheater bar would take up more trunk space than a traditional lug...

And around the same time they required cars to come from the factory equipped with seatbelts starting with the 1968 model year.

And then in 1998 it was dual front Air Bags.

Seat belts and Air bags I can live with, pun intended, but Knock off wheels, that one I still don't get.
