1965 Telescopic Steering questions - need pictures

    Hello!
Two Questions about 65 Steering column configuration.
    1. in the AIM it references marks in the steering column shaft, Hub, horn contacts, steering wheel etc. Two of them are shown on the attached picture. They are not lined up in the picture but I have corrected that. My question is this. Should the marks all be at 12 o'clock with the flat on the shaft facing straight up at the steering coupling with the wheels straight ahead? I think that is how it should be and mine is not as shown. The reason that I think it is not correct as shown is because my Bow Tie on the horn button is not horizontal with the steering and wheel straight ahead. It looks like if the mark was at 12 o'clock than the Bow Tie would be flat.
    2. Second I am wandering where the plastic stud on the turn signal wire connector on bottom of the column goes. I think maybe it clips the connector onto the brake pedal bracket somewhere near the brake switch radio capacitor? Any pictures of this area on a 65 or 66 would be appreciated. I found a post for a 67 but it is a different connector.
    Thanks in advance
    For your help

    William,
If I understand your question correctly (and at my age "understanding" is sometimes a problem) you are correct to line up the marks as you describe in the first sentence. If you install the ring lock positioning stud at the six o'clock point your horn button will align correctly.
Also, is it possible your steering box is not "on center"? The six steering wheel to hub attaching screws should be Phillips head. I can't tell from the picture if yours are. Because of the angle that you took the picture I can't tell if you have the correct horn button retainer.
Let's see what others have to say. Bill

Sorry if I was not clear.
I think that maybe the column is put together wrong.
I think that the marks on the shaft, hub, horn contact etc should be at 12 o'clock when the flat at the gearbox end is facing straight up (12 o'clock).

Also when I put it back together I put the lock ring positioning stud at 2 o'clock because the AIM says to put it 180 degrees from the marks on the shaft and hub. Since those marks are currently at 7 o'clock then I put the stud at 2. I think I need to drive the car now and see if the trun signals cancel correctly. I have a feeling that they will not. So if they don't then I think I need to figure out how to re index the upper shaft to the lower shaft. so that the marks and the flat line up.

Hello again, So as I suspected the turn signals do not cancel correctly unless the marks on the shaft, hub etc are at 12 o'clock.
I think that maybe my steering box is not on center. Can someone please post a picture of 65 Telescopic column rag joint installed with the box on center and the wheels straight ahead and the steering wheel oriented correctly?
I have the flat on the lower end of the steering shaft horizontal. and the bolt horizontal I think maybe it is supposed to be vertical so that the split in the coupling on the steering box input shaft can be at 12 o'clock??? Been looking at service manual 63 and 65 supplement and can't seem to find anything definitive.

Also I could really use a picture of the Turn signal switch connector under the dash. IE where does the plastic mounting stud go into?
          Thanks in advance

OK got steering wheel centered my gearbox was not on center took off coupling and got gearbox input shaft mark at 12 o'clock and then reassembled coupling with steering wheel and hub marks at 12 o'clock. Then made adjustments to tie rod sleeves to make wheel centered when car traveling straight ahead. about 1.5 turns on the sleeve. Sleeves were exactly centered before. Here are pictures of the mark on the steering input shaft and the arangement of the coupling when done. Maybe this will help someone else in the future.

            P.S.
I STILL really could use a picture of where the steering column turn switch connector goes under the dash on a 65 with telescopic column!!!!
            Thanks in advance
