I find that hard to believe. Chevrolet built at least ten million small blocks with those springs, and a lot of them are still around. Try NAPA or another retailer. Also, Dana Corp. may still offer them in their own brands, and GMPD may still offer them, 3911068.

These springs have a rate of 267 lb/in, and typical seat force is 80-84 pounds and around 200 open, depending on installed height and max cam lift. If set up for .090-.100" coil bind clearance (using the actual max rocker ratio of 1.44:1) valve train limiting speed is at least 6500 for any OE hydraulic cam, and 7000+ for any OE mechanical lifter cam.

Paid hostage rates for GM springs for the 61 vette. Have on set of vs-677, need another for an early set of 461 heads for the 63.

Price diff staggering, GM to vs-677

Figure someone has a supply. Other online sites mention discontinued as well.

Will also check into vs 170,

          thanks,

          Joe

1955-66 small blocks did not originally use the GM #3911068 (or, aftermarket VS-677). 1955-66 Corvettes used spring GM #3735381. This spring is still available from GM (for $23.67 GM list) 65 years after it was first released. I believe in the aftermarket it's known as Sealed Power VS-521. Are these two exactly the same? Maybe, maybe not.

I suppose the 3911068 or VS-677 could be used on 1955-66 but they were never cataloged for those applications. However, if either of these was used for 1955-66, then the valve caps (retainers) should also be changed to the correct ones. 1955-66 and 1967+ do not use the same caps.

              Re: VS-677 valve springs discontinued

The 3911068 went into production for '67 replacing the earlier spring. The Sealed Power VS-677 equivalent could be had for about a buck apiece in the recent past. It has a slightly higher rate than the earlier spring, and I've always recommended it as a replacement for the earlier spring. Even though GM still offers the earlier spring, the price is ridiculous and the... 068 is not far behind. If the Sealed Power VS-521 is still available I believe it would be acceptable if the price is reasonable.

For those of you in current or future need of SB valve springs, suggest you start working the phone to get a hold of the right person at F-M to discuss this issue. Since these springs are likely built in batches to supply a year or two of estimated demand, they may just be "out of stock".

As I previously stated, given the demand for this spring, I find it hard to believe that it has been discontinued.

Whatever spring you choose, assuming an OE cam, either hydraulic or mechanical lifters, don't vary far from OE specs to avoid valve train durability issues.

Duke, the VS 521 springs are available from Summit Racing for $5.99 I suspect that your local parts house could also order them.

                  Re: VS-677 valve springs discontinued

That's still a pretty steep price when you could by a complete set of 16 ...068 springs for about 20 bucks not long ago. From my old GMPP catalog a set of 16 ...068 springs is 10132715, so if anyone is interesting try that...

10132715 is the valve seal kit. The spring part number listed with them is 94666580 which is used on a 350-290 crate engine. The springs have the same spring rate that Duke mentioned but an internet price of $8.40 each, no bargain.

Apparently discontinued Patrick. Not a good number at GM Parts Direct or Scoggin Dickey
