    squirts inoperable

    Hey guys,
Just picked up a 65. The squirts don't work but I can hear the pump running. Seems like a prime issue? Any ideas on an easy way to prime this?

Get a mouth full of water and blow into the reservoir hose while someone is activating the washer switch, this may take a few attempts. Also check the squirters to see if they are clogged, try a fine wire or pin to open them up.

Rubber pump diaphram may be hard. Easy to replace; just under the hose nipples on the pump

I had the same problem with my rebuilt pump assembly on my 64. I could hear the pump working but it would not squirt. Mike McCagh provided the solution in a reply to a thread I started. It needs to be primed - Mike suggested a gravy baster or something similar - fill the baster with water, pull the water hose off the reservoir, put the tip of the baster into the end of the hose - hold it firmly in position, squeeze the bulb on the baster and force water through the system. May have to do this 2 or 3 times. The issue is that the pump does not have a lot of pulling power so if there is air in the line it can't draw fluid from the reservoir, the line feeding the pump has to be filled with water. Good luck.

Bruce - in the interest of keeping peace in the household, rather than "borrowing" the good gravy baster from the kitchen, consider going to a Dollar Tree or Dollar Store etc, you can pick one up in the kitchen department for a dollar.

              Areas to look at:

              1) Prime with water with your wife's best turkey baster
              2) The diaphragm is hard or cracked and will not draw water - Replace
              3) The check valves have become inoperable - Replace
              4) There is debris in the hose, hoses or squirter - Clean

All are easy to fix, some just take longer than others.

I prime the pump with a syringe with water night before ops checking at Judging. Makes me feel a little better.

Another possible problem with these primitive systems is the ends of the rubber reproduction hoses stretch if the nipple ends are taken on and off several times. That causes one or more of them to suck Air. Just remove them and cut off about 1/2" with a sharp utility knife for a tighter seal. A little hand lotion on the rubber seals and check valves doesn't hurt either. It will soften them up a bit.
