    70 Distributor Shield Picture

Having referenced the JG I am in need of a better pictures of the distributor shield.

Specifically the box type right before the 1 piece shield.

I believe this is the one where the screws were replaced with two spot welds on the passenger side.

I am curious regarding the spot welds on the driver's side as well.

What do the tooling marks look like on the top part of the shield?

    Thanks, Bill

Bill, the two-piece distributor shield on my May Built 70, VIN 9753, looks very similar to the pictures in the JG, and IIRC judged without issue. However, I don't see any spot welds as you describe.

      Thank you Pat.

I am very confused as the JG says after about sn 5000 the box with screws on the passenger side was replaced with a box having two spot welds that replaced the screws basically making it a two piece versus three piece box.

      Kind Regards, Bill

        Re: 70 Distributor Shield Picture

        Bill,
Are you referring to "2 piece" meaning a top and a box and a "3 piece" meaning a box made of two detachable pieces and a top? If you are, then from what I understand and according to the '69 manual, the box was spot welded together until mid '69 when it was made to come apart with screws. I have all the original shielding on my early '69 and the box is one piece making it difficult to take the box off. Half of the ignition wires must be disconnected so that the cap and other wires lifter off so that the box can be lifted up to take it off. With the screwed together box, I think that it can be separated and removed with the cap and wires in place. If it was changed in mid '69 then wouldn't '70's be all screwed together? Or did they go back to spot welded boxes after #5000? Maybe I misunderstand what you mean.
The marks on the top part of the shield are, I believe, draw marks created by the stamping dies that form the top. They are straight lines around the perimeter of the vertical sides of the lid. The absence of these, along with the pure white plastic rivets, are indications of a reproduction lid. I will try to post a picture of my originals later today after I go to the shop.
Sorry if I got any of what you are asking wrong.
        Jeff

          Thank you Jeffrey,

The way I read the JG is that up until about serial number 5000, the box was held together with screws as you describe. After #5000 and up to about #14,000 the box had spot welds on the passenger side in place of the phillips screws. The driver's side was held together with the winged screws that affix the box to the shield supports.

At least that is my interpretation of the JG.

Mine only had the shield supports when I got it and based on serial #11,327 I should have the full box and not the one piece shield. The supports are for the later type one piece shield and there is NO evidence that is correct for mine.

            Bill,
Here is a photo of my original shield draw marks.
