This just came up on Corvette Forum, and I thought it was interesting enough to bring over here.
Two 1968 427 engines, both assembled on the same day.
The engine pad for car 712 has an engine stamp of T082I1L
The engine pad for car 599 has an engine stamp of T0821IL.
The correct engine code in both cases is "IL".
However, the engine code for car 712 is 1L (ONE L, not EYE L)
We all know that the capital letter I and the digit 1 and used interchangeably in the DATE CODE PART of the engine stamp.
However, I have never seen the digit 1 (ONE) used in place of the letter I in the ENGINE SUFFIX CODE PART of the engine stamp.
And I find it very odd that the IL gang holder for 0821 has the letter I and the digit 1 swapped between cars 599 and 712.
I believe that this is a factory anomaly, but an interesting one.
