    1968 C3 Front Air Dam

    Hello All,
I have a question regarding my 1968 C3. I have just installed a replacement lower front air dam on my car. The two middle mounting bolts are a black oxide. When originally installed were these bolts left black oxide or were they painted the body color. Thank you in advance for your help.

The bolts were left black oxide.

        All----

A small point but the bolts and nuts are black phosphate, not black oxide. Black oxide is a finish which is actually rarely used on original fasteners. Those fasteners which are done in black oxide are usually interior parts, not body or chassis parts.

My opinion based on my experience with original type cars is that the bolts, and nuts that attach the front air dam are gray phosphate.

Yes, I use "black phosphate" as a generic term for any phosphate-finished fasteners. However, there are differences in "degree of blackness". The bolts and nuts in question are better described as gray phosphate. GM just uses the term "phosphate" to describe the finish.
