    VIN Plate

    All,

New to NCRS and this forum. I am starting a NCRS resto on my 69 vette. The car was found in a barn in south texas. It's a one owner car that has been sitting since the early 80s and not in the best conditions. The VIN plate on the car is completely rusted to the point half of it is missing. I am told vette sometimes have issues like this but I am no expert.

My question is does anyone know who can help me get a replacement VIN plate and what is needed from a documentation perspective. I have all the paperwork assuming forms, etc. are required.

    Thanks much!

    Re: VIN Plate

Jeff, NCRS accepts an original VIN plate or a state issued VIN plate. I guess state could be metal or paper depending on the state. It's your to-do. Go to the state DMV with a picture of the original VIN, They may ask for you to remove it and bring it in. Plus all the paperwork you have. They may send the state police to see the car to verify the VIN. They will also check to see if the car was stolen.

    Good luck

      Jeff, Welcome to the NCRS..

As Harry mentioned, the NCRS will not judge a car with a repop VIN plate. In fact it will be branded as counterfeit and recorded in the database. If your intent is to get the car judged, leave the VIN plate like it is or get a state issued replacement.

As an aside, if the VIN plate is that rusted, I'd be mightily concerned about the condition of the birdcage...just a thought.

          Leif and Jeff------

My thoughts exactly. There needs to be a thorough inspection of the car including the birdcage and frame before a decision is made to begin doing expensive things.

Thanks to everyone. Appreciate the advice and recommendations. Actually there was only slight damage to the birdcage which has already been repaired. Thanks again.

                          Chuck,

Thanks again for your guidance a few weeks ago on my 69 VIN plate. Again, I am not a big vette guy (I am too tall :-) ) but started to wonder about NCRS certification. My question is can a car that has no documentation receive NCRS certification? It's an all original car so I have a good starting point but have nothing to prove options, etc. Any suggestions?

NCRS judging doesn't certify a Corvette. We judge it as presented. In some cases we can detect owner inspired options, in other cases not so much. No paperwork, other than proof of ownership and insurance, is required for us to judge a Corvette.
