1985 corvette

starting to fix up '85 vette w/automatic. took out radio and console while shifter was in park. had to move it but it is stuck in park. anyone have idea?

The key has to be in UNLOCK to move the shifter out of PARK. If you have disconnected cables at the steering column or shifter, you can manually lift the shifter lock lever (there's a vertical coil spring on the front that actuates this mechanism) and shift it out of PARK. There are 2 cables on the shifter. One goes through the floor which shifts the transmission. The other one is the lock mechanism.

i am new to this thread stuff so here goes hoping this reply will go. thank you for your response. the car starts, runs and the steering works. I took off the lock cable and worked well. to remove the tranny cable there is a little electric box that is bolted to the console. does that do anything? I guess will take that apart and see what happens for that cable. frustrating.

thank you very much. learning slowly. finally got the thing to shift. I had to lightly thump on the top of shift lever to get it to move. evidently there is some rust in the shift mechanism which I will have to clean or else buy a new shifting lever.

Replace the shift knob without the snap ring, use the butt end of a screwdriver to push down on the split metal arms to move the shift handle out of Park.

thank you for your reply. i finally figured out that it was stuck and had to hit the knob with my hand to release it. think it has rust in it so am treating it for rust. working so far. might have to replace the assembly.
