Floyd, called CorvetteMods and the guy told me it was as pictured. Guess they didn't realize their store is 30 minutes away from me. Stay tuned

        All,

Received both backup light switches. CorvetteMods switch is Standard Brands part # LS253. Called Standard Brands tech support and they said LS253 is for Chrysler products.

Photos of both switches. The Corvette Central switch thread length is 5/8 in, while the Standard Brands switch is 3/8 in.

If any of you have an original switch that's out of the car would appreciate a photo and thread length. Thanks,

        Gary

I don't have one handy to look at. However, I'm virtually certain that the GM switch thread length is about 5/8".

Something else that makes me curious: if the SMP LS253 actually is applicable to Corvettes with ZF transmission, why doesn't SMP know that? More applicability=more sales.

            Joe,

Basically asked the tech support guy the same question and he said it was for Chrysler products and not Corvette.

The photo above with the tool that I posted is the original switch from my '93 car. The thread length is 5/8". The GM part number stamped on the base is 10075437. 2FD is stamped on another facet of the base - and the logo Pollak is molded on the black connector. Here are a couple of more detailed photos:

                Keith,

Thanks. Had forgotten about your earlier photo. Appreciate the additional photos.

Could you tell when you removed the switch if it went pass the case wall or not?

Makes me wonder if the 3/8 in SMP part would clear the case wall or not?

                Thanks,

Re: Question - 1992 Manual Trans - Backup Light Switch Source & Guidance

No it didn't go past the case wall - as I recall it needs the full 5/8" for the plunger to make contact. I don't think that 3/8" would make contact. I see that the part you got from Corvette Central with the pigtail has the Pollak logo as well. I didn't find the receipt for the replacement part that I used, but I seem to recall that it was the pigtail part from Corvette Central and when I installed it, I felt that the pigtail made a better electrical connection. The connector from the harness seemed too short.

                  Good luck with the install

GM #10075437 was a predecessor part number to the GM #10159402. It was discontinued and replaced by the 10159402 in January, 1990. I don't know why it was still being used in 1993. Perhaps the 10075437 part number continued to be embossed on the switch after the part number change.

                      Joe -

Interesting anomaly - I looked in GM parts history and see the 1990 change to 10159402.

My car is a ZR1 (LT5) and a very late build (June 1993) first sold January 1994 with about 7K miles at this time. I am sure that this part was original to the car. After I replaced the switch (and my problem was solved), I cleaned it and suspect that it may actually be functional so I kept it. I guess I should figure how to test it.

                        Keith,

Interesting about your ZR-1. My 1992 ZR-1. It was shipped to the Warren, MI Tech Center and sold in Jan '93 with 7k miles on it. Not sure what it was used for at the Tech Center. Wonder how many 140 mph laps at the test track it made?

Rich was right when he said beware of buying from CorvetteMods.

                            Ed,

Appreciate your warning. Rich gave the same advice.

Knew that going in when ordered the backup light switch.

Don't see how the switch they sold me will work since it's reach is 1/4 in shorter than the original.

Found out they're about 30 minutes from where I live. Plan to pay them a personal visit and request a refund.

                            Thanks,

Replace original backup light switch yesterday with the Corvette Central switch.

Checked the original switch and n continuity between terminals. Depressed ball bearing rapidly a dozen times or so and the switch operated. Sprayed ball bearing with Kroil Oil and operated a dozen or more times. Switch works like new. Appears switch was gummed up.

Given that Dad's switch started to not work after several years of sitting, I may try to clean it before replacing it.
