69 427 idler pulley rebuildable

Hi everyone,

Can the 69 427 idler pulley be taken apart and bearings replaced and/or be refurbished in any way or is it a "sealed" unit. I have mine off the car and if anything can be done maintenance wise I'd like to handle it now.

The bearing/shaft assembly which is really the only wear part of the idler is replaceable. In fact, the bearing/shaft assembly was once available from GM under GM #908076. It's discontinued but may be available in the aftermarket.

It's probably a standard industrial bearing and has a number on it. Take that number to a bearing supply house and they can likely find you a replacement as long as that particular design is in production by any bearing manufacturers.

- Is the pulley just pressed on? Not clear how to get this thing apart.
- What was the original finish on this part? I see it available with a gold zinc finish on the pulley and black painted bracket.

The pulley is pressed onto the shaft. The original assembly had a semi-gloss black painted bracket and a zinc plated pulley with NO chromate overplate.

By the way, the same assembly was used for 1969-74 big blocks with C-60. However, the assembly was different for 1968 big blocks with C-60 and was a one-year-only configuration. The primary visual difference is that the 1968 pulley was a traditional grooved pulley with the v-belt riding in the groove. The 1969-74 pulley was an unusual non-grooved pulley with the pulley riding on the reverse side of the belt.

This was a somewhat unusual bearing/shaft assembly. That's because there was only a shaft on one side of the bearing. However, I'm sure there are other applications for this type of bearing/shaft assembly. A bearing supplier ought to be able to cross reference from the GM/Hyatt part number I provided which should also be the number on the bearing if any number is actually found on the bearing. I checked a little bit on this and, at least from the little research I did, I could not find that a replacement is currently available for this bearing. But, it's possible there is one.

It appears that OMC also used a version of this.
It has the same number on the bearing.
It is an obsolete part.
I wonder what style the bearing is? Double row ball bearing?
Something has to take the thrust so a needle bearing is out of the question.
It appears to be of a smaller OD than most with this shaft size.
Most of the current idlers have a single row ball bearing in them.
The least expensive option.

Hello Jack,

I was on a similar quest for this bearing not too long ago and i ended up with NSK P/N 885586. The shaft of this bearing has to be cut down on both ends, but the body of the bearing is the same and the shaft diameter is the same. The NSK bearing is actually a water pump bearing and is sealed rather than shielded.

But it will go back together Im sure. I will do it this winter as I was too anxious to get the car back on the road when I was figuring out what to do with the original idler so I bought the repo item that is out there. It looks pretty close to my original idler assembly except for the dichromate conversion. I posted a thread when I did this and it has some pix that may be helpful. The tags are 1973 LS4 Idler Pulley.
Im pretty sure I have a cross reference for water pump bearings that has dimensions and part numbers from various manufacturers, but I cant seem to lay my hands on it right now. If I can find it I will post it
