1967 Corvette Order Form and Handwritten Retail for Motor Vehicle Form.

I am considering the purchase of a 1967 Corvette roadster, which the seller is advertising as a factory 427 ci, 400 hp, 4spd car. He has included in his advertisement pictures of the Corvette Order Copy ( tank sticker) and the handwritten Retail Order for Motor Vehicle from the original dealership. The Corvette Order Copy lists a 390 HP V8 Turbo Jet option ( option code unclear) and about four lines down, another notation which reads " conv 390 to 400HP". On the handwritten Retail Order for Motor Vehicle form, presumably from the originating dealership, there is a line identifying 390 HP V8 Turbo Jet with a charge of $200.15 and further down the form is another line indicating "conv 390 to 400 HP", with an additional charge of $103.35. Here's my question; is this how a 427/400 car was ordered back in the day. Was a customer charged for the 390 hp version and then charged an additional amount for the 400 hp conversion ? Everything looks authentic, but don't know why there wouldn't be just one notation and one charge for the 427/400 hp option. Any help would be appreciated.

Notice how this 'SAMPLE' Dealer Corvette Order Form also listed two Option Codes (L36 & L68) for the 400hp engine option.

Yes, that just how the option was notated on the ordering documents. Why, I have no idea. It's not as if the L-68 engine was ever actually converted from an L-36. In other words, it did not originally have an L-36 intake manifold and carburetor that was removed and replaced with a 3X2 set-up. The engine was originally built as a 3X2 engine and had suffix codes specific to that.

Many tank sheets are identical to the one you describe here regarding the "conv. 390 to 400hp". Nothing to worry about (as long as the paperwork is REAL). Have my friend Tim Gilmore authenticate it for you. He is a member of the NCRS and validates the tank sheets - and he's a fantastic guy as well. ARA

Nice paperwork. That is what I, and other judges, have seen many times before regarding the 390 to 400 conversion. Typical. I wouldn't be worried, but like i said i would want to have the sheet verified.

The 435 HP aluminum head "L-89" was ordered the same way. The order form/window sticker included L-71 ($437.10) with the addition of L-89 ($368.65) "435 HP (L-71) with aluminum heads".

Of course, only 16 were produced, and I don't know if any of them still have any original paperwork or tank sticker.

Nice paper -- I have a local friend who owns 20k mile 400hp roadster in the same colors.

Well, for 1967 there were only 16 L-89's. However, there were a lot more during 1968-69.

FWIW:This way of ordering goes way back to 1958. In order to to buy an Impala one had to
order a Bel Air first!! Larry

Thank you all for your most helpful assistance. Here's another question regarding the supposed original window sticker and the Protecto-O-Plate information: should the "Dealer to Whom Delivered" information on the top of the window sticker match the dealer info that is printed on the opposite page of the actual Protecto-O-Plate ? Also, should the Window Sticker have a date on it ? Thanks again.

Generally, the dealer printed on the P-O-P folder is the dealer that delivered the car to the first owner. The dealer seen on the window sticker is the dealer to whom the car was delivered. Most often, these would be the same but there could be exceptions. The prime example would be a car that was dealer traded from the ordering dealer (the one shown on the window sticker) to another dealer that actually sold the car to the original purchaser. The car "traded back" to the ordering dealer would be similarly affected.

I've never noted any date on the window sticker.
