    1962 Heater Hose Clamps

If I replace the original Corbin type hose clamps on the heater assembly with more secure worm drive clamps will I take a hit in judging?

If so, if I use both the non original worm drive clamps and the original Corbin type clamps together at these hose connections will I still take a hit in judging?

Thanks for any input & Save the Wave .................... JGM

the answer is yes to both.
and I strongly suggest you do not put worm clamps on the soft copper tubes sticking out of your heater box. The tubes will deform and crush very quickly if you use those clamps. Corbin clamps in the correct sizes, 17 and 15 will hold your hoses just fine.

Thanks Don for the good advice and Info. I kinda figured that the worm clamps might take a judging hit if they were judged at all, but I didn't consider the crush factor of the worm clamp on the copper tubes of the heater assembly. Corbin clamps it is, as original.

The Corbin clamps work fine. But make sure the heater hose elbow that you are using has "shoulders" at both ends to give the hoses and the clamps something to grip. At one time, one of the usual parts suppliers was selling a plumbing elbow that did not have the "shoulders."

In the old days, we'd put a light coating of grease on the inside of cooling system hoses to make sure we could get them off years later. Other guys put gasket cement on those hoses to help them grip better and stay on. If you use gasket cement, you'll have to cut the hose off later. Of course, after some years, you might have to cut the hose off no matter what you used when you first installed it.

Before you slide hoses on to the heater tube connections check them for "roundness". You can do this by inserting your small finger - if it is out of round you will notice it. Mine were like that - from a previous owner being over zealous with incorrect clamps. I was able to make the tubes "round enough" to seal properly by inserting a deep well socket into the tube and just work it by hand. The copper tubing is really - really soft and you will be able to reshape it pretty easily, hopefully enough to seal properly.
