Trying to determine the changeover date for the Frigidaire compressor style during 1966. At some point GM began using a compressor with the barrel having a swedged area on the end. Before that time the compressors had a plain barrel. The only mention of this seems to be the term "EARLY" or "LATE" Can anyone provide information or examples from cars built in December. January or February of 66 and show or describe the compressor? Thanks!

Re: A.C. help
John,
I'm going to bring this thread to the top again. I had a early June with the early case. Now that's not to say that it was repaired at one time and the early case used.
What would a judge say? What would his reason be for a swaged case on a Feb car? From what I have seen, the smooth case was used early in the year. Then, looking for a specific date would be almost impossible as they certainly would use all the cases and clutches till they ran out, then go to the swaged case and later clutch hub.
Either way you have a argument if you get a deduction, because the Question you asked was not answered, and I am sure it was read by a judge.
You will have to do what makes you feel the best about the one you install.
I can see why you ask as Feb was about the middle of the 66 run as they started building in 65.

Re: A.C. help
Sorry for the delay responding, took some time off to attend SEMA and had a great time. Tried to reach Pete Lindahl throuth normal channels and also using the email posted here but no response. The time the compressor designs were changed is still a mystery but have been checking images of cars listed for sale, cars at NCRS events, and cars belonging to friends to see what was used and when. This has been a VERY LIMITED sample - no argument about that - but my observation is that the "swedged" style compressor was seen on a late January car that seemed to have many original parts. The compressor date was appropriate for the build date of the vehicle and had achieved at least one top flight award. I have trust that it is the real thing and was on a very well optioned 300 horse, power glide, power brake, power steering and power window coupe. I have decided that a February 22, 1966 built car would have had the swedged compressor and will proceed in that direction unless someone presents evidence contrary. (both style compressors are in possession so the choice was simply a matter of observation of what existed on cars examined.) The hard lines going over or through the core support on the January car did cross over the core support as opposed to through the support. Thanks to every one for their help and encouragement!- Top
