You will need to modify the battery retainer that is being sold. The originals did not contain the two top reliefs for cable clearance. Where the retainer covers the top of the battery should be straight. You will need to weld in sheet metal to have the edges straight.
I am not certain about the welding/ spot welding.

Believe I have an original, no cutout reliefs and it's spot welded three places, one on the end of the shield, two on the side of the end shield.

Slightly out of focus but shows locations of four (not three) spot welds. Two on surface to left of near corner, one at the hold down bolt hole and one to the far right end of shield. Also no hole in shield for clip attachment as noted in Judging Guide. Hope this helps.

Rod could you look at the top of mine and see if you see anything wrong with it . I know the shield has the cut out . I took the Jacking Label and had it copied and just cut it out bigger. You don't want to have it enlarged because all the wording and pictures are the correct size.

Dan, disclaimer: I'm not an expert, just going by JG description. Mine is not original to my car but seems to conform to JG. The top opening is strictly rectangular, no reliefs, etc. Yours appears similar to a repo I have, as mentioned above by Joseph LeMay, which leads me to think it's a later version. In addition to the reliefs in the top, yours probably has a small hole in the end face of the heat shield for a clip to attach, not present in the '57. These could all be welded up and finished to make it look like the early version. One other difference I noted between my repo and the '57 which I can't see clearly on yours is the corner reliefs where the top edges are formed down. This would be on the bottom edge of the top as installed. The corners have larger and a somewhat different shaped relief than the '57 and would be noticeable to the trained eye.

What's the purpose of the shield on the side? Mine had a generic hold down.

Believe it's a heat shield as it's pretty close to the exhaust manifold.

Here is a new repo and a modified one. I need to get it properly welded and not attached with JB Weld.
