If it were a four-speed I would encourage you to proceed given paint can be reapplied. I'm not sure removing paint will reveal the numbers in their full. Typically its the suffix code (last three digits) of the frame number and date code that are useful.

What I have found is that four-speed frames had backlogged due to the high number of M38 cars being built. But as Pace Cars were built, the frame assembly date codes quickly decreased from December 1977 to March 1978. Lots of Pace Cars with four-speeds. Well in comparison to previous years...ratio type stuff.

Interesting, I live 1 mile from Jerry's Chev and know Jerry. I will print this out and see if he remembers the car.

Ken, thank you. He sold it to Roy Rimmer. I guess they were friends. He ordered it for his 16 year old daughter!

Tom, I pulled the splash shield and started to carefully remove the paint still no luck yet. I do have a question for you. Were the spash shield installed after body paint? They have a ton of overspray and I might as well clean those up while im looking. Eric
