    frame number

I thought that I read someplace years ago that the serial number for the C2's was also on top of the frame on the drivers side. can anyone verify this?
    Thanks

    Yes, in two locations.

      Re: frame number

As Harry mentioned, 2 locations, both on the top surface of the frame on the driver's side. One above the axle kick-up (see pink eraser) and another indicated by the orange screwdriver handle. They are hard to read with the body in place, but with use of angled mirror, lighting device, etc, it is doable...they are often faint, especially on an older frame with lots of "patina".

          Hi Mel,

Both my '65 and '66 have the 8 character abbreviated VIN above the left rear kick-up of the frame as indicated by Jack's pink eraser. This is probably the easiest set to view if the frame isn't too rusty. With the left rear wheel removed feel between the top of the frame kick-up and the underside of the fiberglass luggage area. It was easy to locate on both my cars since there was a slight depression in the frame from the stamping.

Neither of my cars have the extreme aft stamp as shown by Jack's orange screwdriver. Maybe this is a '67 thing? What my cars do have is the same stamp on top of the left frame rail centered below the driver's door opening. Imagine looking down through the middle of the door sill plate and that's where mine were. No depressions. The frame must be stronger there. When I had my '66's left side rocker panel (running board) removed this was the 1st set of frame numbers I found. Lots of road dirt and dust removed/scrubbed frame then with a bright flashlight and inspection mirror I was able to view the numbers in reverse. Probably very difficult on side exhaust cars.

Cool memories from long ago. Happy hunting.
          Mike

Both my 65's are like what Mike described above. One stamp on the kick-up and another on the frame rail in the door opening area.

                  Re: frame number

                  Hi Pat,

My '66 is a December 1st built St. Louis car. Always considered her to fall into the "early" category since she has many of the earlier characteristics. Since Mel began this thread I've spoken to a few of my '65 and '66 buddies. We're all familiar with the two frame stamps that I mentioned below. All of our cars have the stamp centered below the left (driver's) door opening and the one centered above the left rear kick-up.

So, from your post I guess it's safe to assume that later '66 and all '67's have the extreme aft stamp? Dangerous to assume I know.

Here's a good question. Do these later '66 and all '67's have three stamps? The two aft ones as indicated by Jack's photo and the one centered at the driver's door opening as Jim and I describe? Anybody?

Hey Mel, by now you must've been curious enough to hunt for these numbers on your '66? Let us all know.

                  Mike
