    69 corvette door mirror

Good afternoon, I have a 69 car and was looking at my door mirror. It shows 7 DMI 7. In the judging book, it should have a 9 to represent the year. Also, The mirror is larger then the one i just bought. Any thoughts?

The original 1969 mirror was 5-3/8" wide and 3-7/8" in height. If the mirror on the car is larger than this, it's a GM (or aftermarket) replacement. GM replacement mirrors after the later 70's were wider than originals.

Mark, Paragon Corvette makes the right size mirror and can put a date on the glass.

        Hello Mark.

I believe your mirror, decoded, shows it to to be manufactured during the seventh month (July) of a year ending in seven by Donnelly Mirror Inc. As detailed above, if the head of your mirror is larger than 5 3/8" X 3 7/8", the year is likely 1977, 1987, etc.

If you're planning to get a replacement mirror, you'll want to have it dated to align with judging standards. Depending on your car's build date, you might expect to see an "8" (1968) instead of a "9" (1969) for mfg year.

        Hope this helps.

          Mark,
As usual, Don's advise is spot on. The mirror on my '69 is 9 DMI 8 (September '68) for an October '68 production. BTW the code is upside down on the bottom of the glass. I guess it didn't matter to the folks at Donnelly how the glass was glued to the chrome holder.

              Ron,

I may be wrong, but I seem to recall the large head side mirror was introduced with the 1975 model.

Yes, 1975 was the first year for the wider mirror, GM #345493. This mirror also became SERVICE for 1968-74 after 1975.
