    Harmonic balancer rubber hitting the timing cover.

    I have been working on tracking down the exact issue that causes the rub between the balancer and the timing cover on my 63 340hp motor.

    I inspected the crankshaft for excessive end play and found none.
    I suspect it it just a hemorrhage of the rubber elastomer.
    I attempted to show it in the picture below;

    You can see the complete lack of clearance in this picture below;

    I recently spoke to a friend of mine with a 340hp and he had the same issue.
    He had the harmonic balancer rebuilt when he did the motor.
    I made a mistake by not addressing this 60 year old balancer when the motor was apart.
    So I am planing on pulling the balancer this winter and getting it rebuilt.
    I was planning on using this guy in Oregon as it is close to me.

    Anyone pulled the balancer on a C2 while in the car?
    I do have the tool and a plug to use so the thread inside the crank nose isn't damaged.
    Looks fairly straightforward if you pull the fan and shroud?
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks
    Rick

    I was easily able to pull the HB with the engine in the car.
    I had to remove it so I could replace the front seal and timing chain and gears.

      Yes, plenty of room to get the job done.
      It's a good life!
