Hello,


I have a '63 Coupe and I need to tap in to everyone's experience. I wanting to get a car hauler trailer and I don't know what length, height and width to get. Also any extras to get like an escape door, types of tie downs?

I too wanted an enclosed trailer, but needed a small one because of parking space. I ended up with a Car Mate 18' X 8' that works well, tows great and fits in my parking space.

Here is what I used to haul my 62's, 64's, and Model A coupe. I added the track on the floor for the webbing over the tires. The ramps act as the stone guard. Nice and LIGHT trailer if open trailer is okay for you. R & P Trailers, Seneca, IL.

I bought the Car Mate in 2005 for $6k. Towed it with old Cadillac Escalade and Sierra Crew Cab (2) The latest with the 6.2 and 10 speed. Trailer weight is 3000# and with my 57 it's 6200#. Never had a problem.

FWIW>I only take older Corvettes and Camaro's for a trip. I bought a new United years ago and here where my spec's>

18' by 102" wide by 7' tall(yes only 7' to cut wind resistance;can not and do not haul taller vehicles.
4 doors>Escape door in the middle to get out of car and front small box door on drivers side(to strap car in the front).
Regular walk thru door on front passenger side to strap front right side of car.
Drop down ramp with beaver tail floor.
Spare tire box embedded beneath the floor and extra tie down rings.

TRAILER PULLS LIKE A DREAM AND EASY TO TIE DOWN AND STRAP CAR IN.

Look at ATC trailers. Big left hand door, plus the fenders comes off for opening of the car door for clearance over the trailer tires.

Just sold my 24'. It was to large for my taste.
I recommend a 20' as it gives one a little more room to maneuver to get to the tie downs.
However, I would consider a 18' which is the minimum length in my opinion.
I actually hauled a 57 in a 16' once. If it would have had the bumpers on it I couldn't have done it.
I like Larry's suggestion of keeping the height down. Besides, how much time does one really spend inside one?
I have pulled a lot of trailers and the frontal area is the biggest killer of fuel economy.
I have pulled a open car trailer and gotten 14mph. With the 20' enclosed it was 9 or 10mph, with the same truck.
Watch out for the door to fender clearance. My trailer had added ramps bolted to the inside floor so the doors would clear the inner fenders.
I also used a different 24' trailer with no issues with the inner fenders and the car on the floor. (same car)
Just depends on how high the floor is off the ground and tire size.
I sure like the enclosed trailers, no ones business what I am hauling.
When overnight stays are involved I sleep better with it locked up.

This is a Montrose aluminum trailer. While only 16' in length, the 'bump out' in the front door allows a C2 to fit. Options include the two 7'10" side doors and E-trac and air vents. Total weight of trailer is less than 2000 lbs. It's available in different interior widths and heights and lengths.

I have a 20' Featherlite enclosed trailer. I installed a wench in the front and I love the tailgate that has piano hinges at the full door pull down. The 20' is the best length for a C2 I think. Room in the back and front to transport other items you may want to tag along. Be sure to purchase the best straps you can to tie the car down to keep it from moving around in there.

FWIW>"Best Length" is the decision of how much maneuverability is needed. I live a normal city block(about 300'X20' wide road)
with tall curbs. I have an 18' (total length of 21') with tongue) and have a driveway next to my house. I can back the trailer up w/o
too much difficulty. My neighbor has a 20' camper + tongue length(do not know this exact figure) and he has one heck of a time
backing his trailer into his driveway. Has to pinch tires at times. A little difference in length makes a world of difference. Larry

20 foot Haulmark V Nose has worked really well for me. No complaints.
