Re: 1970 Interior delima
Ron, with everything almost 50 years old my advice is to replace it all, sometimes the old covers will be stretched over the new foam and the stitching may not hold up. if they are leather you may have a chance. its really your call on something like this. if the car is mostly original and you want the originality just live with it. My 72 had the same issue, foam tends to break down over the years and flatten out, there was such a difference with new foam (comfort), the repro covers are pretty close to original as far as grain and texture. colors may vary slightly black would be a easy color.New England chapter member, 63 Convert. 327/340- Chapter/Regional/national Top Flight, 72 coupe- chapter and regional Top Flight.- Top

If you are going to have the car judged you should know that ALL reproduction interior parts are easily detectable as NTFP. As you are aware from reading the TIM&JG.Terry- Top

Re: 1970 Interior delima
Also, since you say foam is coming through the covers, I assume you have standard comfort weave seat covers. If so, the foam is from the covers themslves and not the foam "buns" the covers are stretched over. A thin layer of foam is between the comfort weave vinyl and the heavy cloth it is sewn to. As Terry stated, all reproduction covers are a stamped pattern on vinyl instead of true comfort weave material. I suppose no one makes true comfort weave material now and that is a shame. Comfort weave vinyl was much better in hot weather than solid vinyl or leather. Chip.- Top

Read through this thread; look at my pictures and what I wrote.

I agree with Terry that the originals are superior. Most members choose not to do some restoration on their cars.

Re: 1970 Interior delima
Ronnie --- As Paul said, the foam buns are not the problem. The comfort weave seat covers on a 70 have foam sown into them to make the pleats and it is this foam that hardens and becomes powdery, leaking pollen-like dust thru the weave. Later comfort weave seat covers from about 1975 look identical to 70s but are not subject to this problem because a material resembling a grey carpet pad was used instead of foam rubber to form the pleats. The best solution is to find NOS GM seat covers made after about 1975. I have heard that a good upholstery shop can remove the deteriorated foam from the seat covers and sew in the carpet pad material but I do not know where to go for that.
I bought a set of new seat covers from the parts dept for my 70 in the late 70's to have in case I ever needed them. When my seat covers started to have the continuing yellow dust problem, I unpacked the new covers I had hoarded for 30 years only to discover that they gave me 3 bottoms and only one back by mistake but they were the superior 1975 style covers without the foam rubber and they still look great. If you find any black NOS covers I will be happy to buy an extra back or trade for my extra bottom.- Top

Re: 1970 Interior delima
SMS in OREGON has 100% Correct ORIGINAL COMFORTWEAVE by the yard in MANY COLORS.
I just had seat covers for a Camaro sewn from original NOS material.
There is A HUGE DIFFERENCE between the ACTUAL PRODUCT and the best reproduction "comfortweave" (which is nothing more than a heat stamped vinyl appearing to mimic the "appearance" of comfortweave).

Re: 1970 Interior delima
Ron,
Just my 2 cents. Usually aftermarket seat foam has a different configuration than originals. They seem to be puffy looking compared to the originals and are easily detectable.

Re: 1970 Interior delima
Ordered in Feb, delivered month... promised in April.
I warned my brother to buy the fabric and have the local guys sew them up.
PERSONALLY I am thinking about buying a couple of yards of bright blue and a couple of red because I will inevitably buy a car with one or the other and never be able to find correct fabric. FWIW they are charging $170 per yard. .James A Groome
