Early and late 63 gas caps

I have observed pictures of both early and late caps but never a color phone with them next to each other.
I thought I would post one just as a point of interest.
According to the JM the early was used up to approximately VIN 11000

FWIW the Late/Great Joe Perri claimed that virtually all 63's had the early gas cap. Now that's another story for another day.

I have the original cap to mine and it is # 11068. Car is still in the paint shop but if memory serves me correctly, it is like the one on the left with the original "sealer" material. I will check this week if I can remember to do so.

I should have mentioned that I pulled the old gasket off the cap for replating.
        They are available aftermarket.
Hopefully the new gasket is a better replacement than the Paragon gasket I purchased for my oil fill on my 63.
The replacement wasn't cork like the original. Good for a deduction.
Interesting it had a cork gasket in it but the thickness wasn't correct and the cap wouldn't tighten quite like it thought it should.
Replacement was the correct thickness but not the correct material.

Yep - checked the cap at the shop on Friday and it is like the one on the left in the photo (should have taken a photo-duh). FOrtunately, mine still has the gasket material.

The one on the left has a turned appearance and originals were stamped. It has been machined or is a very poor reproduction.

Looks like China has worked on it!

I agree. That was my impression when I first saw it.

Below is a picture of the same cap before I cleaned it up.
In the first picture i posted, of the underside, if you look at the 10 o'clock position you can see the stamp.

                Here is a picture of the same cap after cleaning;

Here is a close up of the stamping.

The plating results change depending on the surface finish.
I wanted the plating to have some shine on the underside.
I used ultrasonic cleaner and elbow grease to get the finish you are seeing.
I was going after this look after plating:

Yes this is a Stant cap but it's new and the best example I could quickly quickly find.

Here's a picture of three 63 gas caps. Both early and late.

Notice that the logo is barely legible on these caps.

The close up of the early cap does not compare with the crisp logo image on your picture!

                  A obvious forgery or reproduction.

Once my car gets back to my garage, I will try to get a picture. I am finding it is all but impossible to have time to do any work on the car much less in restoration quality working 45-50 hours week plus commute time. Very frustrating - and expensive!
