    C-2 Reproduction Clocks

Has anyone purchased a reproduction clock and have any experience with their reliability or other comments? I see them on Ebay and wondering how they compare to original clocks.

I have purchased several from Instrument Services Inc, both directly and through eBay, over the years.
In past years they were undetectable from originals, especially when installed.

Last year I purchased one and installed it in a 1977. The black paint of the face is flatter than original, and if you know it you can see it comparing it to the other gauges. I do not know if they changed paint or supplier for the paint, but I suspect they did. Unfortunately I was disappointed with it.

Thank you Patrick that is very helpful, hopefully others have purchase a C-2 and will respond as to it's paint on a current unit. That would be detectable. Does it run properly?

        Runs great.

So far the judges have not noticed the difference in gloss level, but I can. Then again, I'm picky.
I may be working on another clock this winter, and I would look at having it serviced so that the car keeps the correct face.

Frankly that is what I am debating, getting mine fixed or buying a new repo.

Robert, I put a new clock in my '65 a few years ago. The original still worked but was not reliable and since the car won't be judged again I went with the repro and still have the original. I thought I had a problem earlier this year and would have to pull it out (a real pain). The reset came loose and would not function (the clock still worked). It turns out it had come "unscrewed" by turning the knob counter-clockwise, I screwed it back in and now only set the clock turning it clockwise. Good luck, Don H.

Thank you good info. My hands don't fit up in there very easy anymore either and it's a fair amount of work to put the glove compartment without messing up the hot wire.

I have one of the newer version repro clocks in my personal 66. I also have an original that will work for a few months, stop and then have to be removed and cleaned/lubricated to keep working. The latest generation repro pretty much looks exactly like the originals and the second hand ticks (as opposed to sweeps) as it should. The repro keeps great time. However, it will get a deduct from NCRS. The original mechanical clocks have a solenoid rewind mechanism that clicks to rewind every 20 seconds, its why the clock will run for a short time with battery disconnected. You can hear the rewind click by listening carefully. Bottom line, for a correct look that keeps great time a repro is fine. For NCRS judging you want an original.

                    Ed,

Are you sure you don't have one of the newer versions of a quartz clock?
That's what it sounds like to me. Reproductions with the original mechanical movements are still available.

Reproductions are available for 65-67 however the setting stem is short and the second hand clicks one second at a time unlike the originals and since they are quartz they don't have the reset click
