    79 Power Steering Refresh Suggestions

My 79 is a 1-owner L82 4-spd car w/29K original miles. I've kept it as factory original as possible since day 1.

My power steering leaks are now beyond simply annoying, and I'm ready to repair the problem. I'm aware that it's a soft spot in these cars that many before me have had to deal with. I'm considering replacing the control valve, the cylinder, and hoses. I've reviewed posts on multiple forums as well as here to learn more about what's currently available, what's correct, what's reliable, etc. I've visited many of the usual Corvette vendor websites, and/or talked to them about what they have available. One vendor is not currently selling rebuilt cylinders due to quality issues. Some sell only new parts, or only rebuilt parts, or a combination of both.

I'm wondering if anyone has recently done this repair and what they found worked best. My primary considerations are correctness, and quality and reliability. I can go with new or rebuilt for the valve and the cylinder. I'll also pick up a set of replacement hoses at the same time. I'll be at Carlisle next week so I'm hoping to settle on what to go with so I can order ahead of time and pick up there. Or, I can order there and they can ship to me after the show.

Any advice would be most appreciated. Thanks! Ken

    Ken,

If the car only has 21000 miles I would rebuild your original parts if you are mechanically inclined.

The steering slave cylinder has a seal kit available in the aftermarket (napa) that will work fine UNLESS the chrome rod is wore when it's approx in the straight ahead position. The only repair for this is a rebuilt or NOS cylinder, back in the day they were just throw away parts when in this condition. I don't know the quality of these rebuilt cylinders so if your cylinder is beyond repair look for a NOS part.

The valve body has a seal kit available also and once again with your car I would go that route. i know there is a procedure for the overhaul in the 1963 shop manual so information is out there, go slow, it's not that difficult.

I have heard so many stories from owners who bought these rebuilt parts and have problems with them so think about keeping your original parts.
