    1963 turn signal issues

I have rebuild my complete turn signal and cancelling parts, but have trouble with cancelling. Should the opening on the white plastic cancelling cam face to the driver side door or to the passenger side??? Thanks

It can only go one one way. If you follow the instructions to install the shaft and column and align the marks starts at the steering box all the way up to the center hub everything should be fine.

    Does this help.

Ruud, if you use the AIM to install the column and look at the marks on the steering box, steering shaft and upper column cone and the steering column hub there is only one way to install the plastic cancelling mechanism.

The other benefit of doing this is, the steering wheel will be centered properly.

Harry, my problem starter when my aluminium cancelation ring broke two years ago. First of all these are hard to get (at that time). Secondly I had to disassemble the complete upperpart of the steering. At the time I was (after a few months looking) able to get one (used) from Ebay. Now I am trying to make everything work like it should so I am gratefull for your input. Looks real easy now. Thanks again.

I had mine rebuilt, and paid good money for the service.
It initially worked but never seemed right. Then it quit cancelling altogether in under 100 miles.
After pulling it apart I found the lock washer missing from the bottom of the aluminum cancellation ring pivot bolt.
If it is missing the pivot bolt has to be left loose for the system to work.
Eventually it tightens up and the ring no longer pivots easily and the signals quit cancelling.

My steering wheel was not aligned with the mark on the top of the column center bolt.
This caused the system to cancel late on on one turn and early on the other.
I got the system working, by aligning the marks, but now the steering wheel is not centered correctly.
Back to the alignment shop! Interesting how one system affects the others.

The detent spring can also be installed in more than one position.

Is the aluminum cancellation ring available new? I was never able to find one as I was looking when I thought I may need one.
            Best of luck.
