Letter C stamp on my block

I'm replacing the intake manifold gaskets on my 67 L79 and found this letter C stamp on the front intake gasket surface of the block. Any ideas on what it is ? Inspection mark at engine plant ? Block has not been out of the car as far as I know.

My guess would be exactly as you surmise. Unfortunately, the meaning of the stamping is probably "lost in antiquity".
