    body off

I an taking the body off of my 66 convertible. I have a lift and plan on using this method to do it. With the convertible hatch open, i was going to put a strap from the back side of the body (there is good piece of steel running along the length), build a tripod out of wood that would end above the windshield and strap the other end to the radiator support. I do not want the body to "flex" down which can break the body. I have the strapping from Nolan Adams to do the lifting. Any feed back would be appreciated.

    Re: body off

Should be supported/lifted as the body mounts do with the doors closed.

From your description it sounds a bit hokey.

Here is a picture of the rig I am currently using, and have used several times for mine. They were all coupes, but it is just 4 straps on the birdcage edges and I never had any flexing issues.

I've used my 4 post lift multiple times for removing/installing the bodies on both coupes and convertibles. Install is always done after paint and there's never been a problem. On convertibles, I made a fixtures that bolt to the top hinge and the door striker just to be safe. They're not needed on coupes as the roof structure prevents any possible flexing.

Thankfully entitled "body off" with nary a reference to "frame off." I'm a bit concerned about lifting with the doors removed. Either leave doors installed and latched or add bracing as shown in Post No. 5.

Agreed, I would never lift without the doors installed.

Here's a pic of a convertible with the doors off and something to substitute for them not being there. Coupes are easy but converts can be a problem. Doors or not the converts will bow like a green stick so be careful.

                    Re: body off

I used the same exact method that Michael Johnson posted a pic of on my 67 Roadster with no issues at all. I bought the strap ends with the flat hooks as they fit really well over the bottom edge of the birdcage. I extended them as far apart as possible to help with support. I removed and reinstalled the body after restoration using this method with the doors ON the car since mine is a roadster. Good luck and take it slow and easy, Jeff
