I was taking off the rear bumper brackets of my '63 coupe when I came across this material under the heads of the bolts for the outside brackets. At first I could not figure out why a socket or wrench would not go over the bolt head until I got my hand up there and felt this stuff. It essentially just crumbled off except for this one piece. It is about the consistency of old plumbers putty. Since this project is for repair rather than restoration I will not be looking to replace it but I am curious of what this stuff is and what was the purpose of it.

Re: Putty like material under bumper bracket bolt heads
I'm never sure if I am the first one to take something apart on my 63 but last year I took the rear bumper brackets apart on my car and found nothing like that. The bolts looked to be all original and never off before.- Top

Re: Putty like material under bumper bracket bolt heads
I am pretty sure that this is the first time these bolts have been removed based on how tough they were to get out and the "Shadow" they left on the frame. I have spoken in the past with previous owners right back to about 1966 and no one ever mentioned any work that was done related to this, but you never know how many Bubba's have had their hands on a 57 year old car. It will probably remain a mystery.Golf is for those who can't play hockey.- Top
