Another reproduction question. Air Cleaner Wing Nut.

Everyone;]
I am in the middle of the process of correcting issues with my 63.
I purchased a Reproduction Air Cleaner Wing Nut for my air-cleaner.
Is this even close? I was told a dime needed to fit in the center of the wings.

JM gives little direction;
"The wing nut is of an open design and is flash chromed."

I gave up a long time ago on the trustworthiness of the parts resellers.

Is this an acceptable part or is the OEM part the only way to go?

Rick, not even close. I'll see if I can dig up a few pictures. Pay close attention to the top of carb. stud.

Consider the potential point loss of the wing nut. Under "5. Air Cleaner" the nut is under "Attachment, labels, hoses, & clamps"
For a 5 - 5 point item. Now assuming the nut is ruled not original - the line item has included in it "labels, hoses, & clamps" some 3-4 more items.
(my interruption here & others may disagree some what)
So if your nut was given a 20% deduction from originality (date or config) we are looking at 20% of 1 point, thus 0.20 points.
Nice to put on your list however is the rest of "5" 100% yet?

John Hinkley had this to say about the wing nut for a simple part it has been beaten to death:

I don't know that this will ever get settled to anyone's satisfaction. In the 60's, GM was using at least 25,000 of these things every single day, from at least three different suppliers (maybe more); they were made in a progressive die setup, from very heavy stock (relatively speaking for their size and draw depth), and the dies required regular maintenance due to high wear rates. Anyone who thinks all of those wingnuts looked exactly the same doesn't understand the manufacturing process.

Gene I wish more judges and enthusiasts would have any manufacturing experience and assembly line experience and then they would understand John's statement. there is no way three manufactures making a excess of ten thousand wing nuts a day can make every single one look the same.

They won't look identical - but - they will not be far from the print or they would have been rejected as non conforming material.

The repros are way off, or they are a different part number, need to get back to the basics.

What is the part number and where is the print?

I have many from different applications with different part numbers, they look very different, so to say they were all the same but will look different depending upon supplier is not exactly good directionally either.

Keith thank you for posting the drawing. One needs to understand this is an inspection drawing. It does not contain enough dimensional information to actual make the dies let alone the part. I propose this is a drawing to reflect acceptance of a standard vendor produced part to satisfy the QC to bring the part in house at GM. Also understand a part of this type is seldom inspec with the print and not rejected for discrepancies.

Industry’s QC as a general rule seldom inspects “off the shelf parts” unless there is a problem.

Seems the reproduction is a good one if the part in Gene's print is correct for my 63.
I just measured it and did a comparison to the dimensions given in the print.
Matches in almost every way, with the exception of the dimension between the wings.
However their is a curve at the bottom and it's difficult to measure in this area.

FYI, there are no "tips" on the wings in the blueprint like there are you in photos. Tops of Wings are flat.

Yes I see the feature you are referencing.
The re-pop has Micky Mouse Ears.
Everything considered this would qualify as a decent reproduction if you went by the print.
The nut I was using wasn't even close.
This was a $8 part. Considering the partial point its worth I think it was money well spent.
Plus it's front and center where everyone can see it.

Just for giggles here is one from eBay. Asking price is $30.

Sure looks just like the re-pop... Micky Mouse Ears and all.

And my all time favorite:
100% NCRS Correct claims the seller.

Sure appears to be the same one I purchased, that you can get for as little as $4. Just file the Micky Mouse Ears of and your good. At least that is the appearance anyhow. Price is $19.99.

On to repainting my Jack. It got beat up since it was painted last. Something like 30 years ago!
The jack points will cost me nothing as I already have the paint.

It just amazes me how “into it” guys can be over such a small insignificant part that is so nothing in the grand scheme. Having ALL the paint work on the body, engine, frame, etc being looked at with the same intensity as this wing nut would be more worth while. Almost everybody over does that and no correct replication is practiced. Not saying anything critical but it’s like picking up the penny’s and letting the dollars bills blow away.
